Don’t you just love Kotaku? They classify this post as a rumour, when it is, in fact, the result of a survey conducted by a third party. They even admit as much:

Of course, being a survey conducted by a third-party publisher and not Sony itself, these prices could well be pure conjecture.

Of course it’s pure conjecture, so why have such a misleading title? Also, I’d bet against a $250 price point.

Code name: Next Generation Portable

When Sony unveiled the successor to the PlayStation Portable two weeks ago, they specifically called it by its code name. I find this somewhat strange: if its final name is indeed PSP2 as is commonly thought, they would probably have named it as such during the announcement. My guess is that Sony is trying to reposition the NGP as an all-purpose portable device and not just a games platform, and the final name will likely reflect this. However, I don’t expect them to drop the well-recognised “PlayStation” brand altogether.

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.

It’s not often that console features are removed via software patches.

In the game business, despite a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, and PSP hardware unit sales, profitability was relatively unchanged mainly due to an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware.

Edge Online has posted an entire reprint of the SEGA/Sony PS3 confidential notes found on SEGAs FTP server.

A Microsoft Word document found on SEGA Americas FTP site, if genuine, reveals a few details about Sony’s upcoming plans for the PlayStation 3. One of these plans seems to be offering most, if not all PS2 titles for purchase on the PlayStation Network – no wonder backwards compatibility isn’t available on the PS3 Slim.

ComputerAndVideoGames.com reports that the PSN Store will be offline this afternoon – around the same time as the Sony press conference at GamesCom 2009 is set to take place. Apart from a rumored hardware refresh of the PS3, this news indicates that we could see some significant software/content updates as well.
