I have a confession to make.
I’ve never liked the way 2D Mario games play. I hate the speed, the inertia and—gasp!—the jumping. Everything feels just slightly off.
Even though I may be in the minority, I am certainly not alone. Michel Ancel doesn’t care for the franchise, either:
“I will tell you something terrible — I don’t really enjoy playing Mario games,” he confessed. “I don’t like gliding, I don’t like its inertia, and I don’t like not being able to give some slaps! It’s a fabulous series, and I understand that people love it, but it’s not my cup of tea.
Rayman Origins was the perfect platformer for me. The gameplay was simply sublime. It’s hard to explain why it felt just right, but it did. The gorgeous graphics and catchy soundtrack didn’t hurt, either.
Rayman Legends builds on top of what made Origins so great and, in many respects, manages to be even better. It looks, sounds and plays beautifully, and even has some classic levels from Origins included in the package. There’s a lot of content, and most of it is infinitely replayable—just like its predecessor.
I haven’t experienced such childlike joy playing a video game in ages. Legends might very well be the best platformer I’ve ever played.
Teacher Joel Levin has seen the positive effect Minecraft can have on relationships among schoolchildren – especially on those who would otherwise be dismissed for being too geeky.
“Suddenly those computer skills become transferable into social capital,” he says.
