My 25 years as a prostitute

Besides my outreach work, I attend conferences and contribute to academic work on prostitution. I’ve had people say to me, “Brenda, come and meet Professor so-and-so from such-and-such university. He’s an expert on prostitution.” And I look at him and I want to say: “Really? Where did you get your credentials? What do you really know about prostitution? The expert is standing in front of you.”

A genuinely heartbreaking story.

Artificial Killing Machine

When individuals are represented purely as statistical data, they are stripped of their humanity and our connection to them is severed.
Through the act of play and the force of imagination, this project aims to reconnect that which has been lost.

Artificial Killing Machine is an autonomous interactive mechanical installation. This time based work accesses a public database on U.S. military drone strikes. When a drone strike occurs, the machine activates, and fires a children’s toy cap gun for every death that results.

Paul Ford: What is Code?

This issue comprises a single story devoted to ­demystifying code and the culture of the people who make it. There’s some technical language along with a few pretty basic mathematical concepts. There are also lots of solid jokes and lasting insights. It may take a few hours to read, but that’s a small price to pay for adding decades to your career.

Seriously, do yourself a favour and read this. A really exceptional piece on computing, computers and the curmudgeonly subset of people known as programmers.

Web Inspector Console Improvements

We recently improved both the Console and Object views in Web Inspector to make it more powerful and fun to use. Our main focus was getting quicker access to useful data and modernizing it to work better with the new changes in JavaScript.
