Only 8.8% of music playback comes from Spotify’s servers. The rest comes from the peer-to-peer network (35.8%) or your local cache (55.4%).

Viacom to sell Harmonix


Viacom said today it will sell the unprofitable Harmonix unit, creator of the “Rock Band” music video game. Excluding the game business and tax benefits, profit was 75 cents, topping the 70-cent average of 26 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

It’s saddening to see that a high-quality franchise like Rock Band isn’t doing well financially.

The men behind Portal's musical score

Portal’s ending theme may well be one of the greatest video game songs ever created, and the duo behind it are also working on the sequel’s music. Jonathan Coulton:

I live and die by the niche, basically. I write all these geeky songs. It’s Internet people who keep me afloat for the most part. But then, suddenly there was this Portal thing, and it was a global phenomenon, and it reached all sorts of people that I wouldn’t have otherwise reached.
