The Banal Horror of Arkansas’s Executions
Jones’s and Williams’s executions were the second and third in a four-day period; at the same facility, on the preceding Thursday, Ledell Lee, aged fifty-one, became the first prisoner to be put to death in Arkansas since 2005.
Solu: A flawed attempt to reinvent the PC
Because for Solu to succeed, Lawson and his team need to convince people to ditch an operating system they’re used to, on hardware they trust, and instead go for a mobile device that does less than the mobile you currently have in your pocket. The software subscription service is nice, but there’s no word on whether major developers actually want to do business on Solu’s terms.
Harsh, but I’m inclined to agree. I just don’t see a situation in which I’d prefer this over a phone/tablet/laptop.
The Most Mysterious Star in Our Galaxy
In 2011, several citizen scientists flagged one particular star as “interesting” and “bizarre.” The star was emitting a light pattern that looked stranger than any of the others Kepler was watching.
One possible theory is that an extraterrestrial civilisation has built a bunch of structures close to it. It’s extremely far-fetched, but riveting to think about. The scholarly paper detailing the discovery can be found here (PDF).
Netflix Announces Its New Maternity And Paternity Leave Program
This is a pretty landmark perk, with the company showing both current and potential employees how much it cares. The company suggests parents can come back to the office either part or full time, then go back out as necessary during the first year. All paid of course.
Here in Finland, we have guaranteed maternity/paternity leave, but this isn’t common in the US. Good on Netflix.
Baltimore Mayor Fires Police Commissioner Anthony Batts
As of Wednesday, police said there had been 155 homicides this year, a 48% increase from the comparable period last year. May’s 42 homicides were the most in a month in 25 years. Nonfatal shootings were up 86%, with 303 so far this year.
I knew it was bad, but I didn’t know it was this bad.
