With no prior knowledge of OpenStack, I must say that as a user, it has proven to be a really nice experience. Was able to configure and start and instance with an extra attached volume in a few minutes. Good stuff.

Matt Haughey’s pervy internet-connected motion-sensing security camera recently snapped a photo of him in the nude and emailed it to him. Hilarious, right? Sort of?

I predict local systems and services (i.e. ones that are not cloud-based) will enjoy a renaissance before long.

Frenkiel said that if they had continued with Amazon, MemSQL would have spent roughly $900,000 over the next three years. This validates his decision to switch to physical servers at a cost of $200,000. “The hardware will pay for itself in about four months.”

“The public cloud is phenomenal if you really need its elasticity,” he said. “But if you don’t — if you do a consistent amount of workload — it’s far better to go in-house.”
